The Sudden Reveal of Facial Aging
We discovered something profound about facial aging recently, and it came from an unexpected source. It wasn’t that aging itself changed—but the speed of change did. The rise of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, and now the rapid results from RTA, gave us a front-row seat to accelerated facial aging. When fat loss happens so quickly, you don’t just look leaner—you look older. This rapid transformation allowed us to finally see the true pattern of aging clearly for the first time. And what we learned applies directly to every face, especially after 40.
If you’re over 40, losing weight, or planning to lose weight, this is a must-watch lesson. I’m going to walk you through simple, inexpensive steps to alter the course of facial aging. And I’ll share my 10-Pound Rule before we finish. This is the missing step: face priming. We do it in Korea, and you can easily do it at home.
The Four Things Happening to Your Face
First, understand what’s going on under the surface. Fat leaves the face fast. Cheeks flatten, temples hollow out, and as a result, the eyes droop at the edges, under eyes sink, creating hollows. A visual helps: Picture one—she looks good. Picture two—loss of midface volume leads to sagging around the nasolabial folds and the lower mouth. Picture three—hollowing of the temples, the eye droops a little. Picture four—the under-eye hollowing that causes dark circles. You get the picture.
Second, collagen is already in decline. Around age 35 to 40 and beyond, collagen production drops significantly, and the body’s repair process slows down. Third, face structure signals drop. Many people now have low protein intake, do too much cardio, and not enough resistance training. These internal signals are low, so the body downregulates muscle and support structures—and your face reflects that. Fourth, face fat leaves and shifts quickly, especially during rapid weight loss.
The Face Priming Protocol: Seven Steps
Step One: Red Light Therapy as Your Foundation
Red light therapy increases mitochondrial activity and ATP production, which in turn boosts collagen signaling to your fibroblasts. Your fibroblasts produce collagen and elastin, and they need energy to perform. Use a red light mask consistently to keep your skin active while volume is changing—especially if you’re losing weight or on GLP-1s. This optimizes your skin’s energy foundation.
Step Two: Move the Tissue
Your face is living tissue—if you don’t stimulate it, it flattens daily. Think of facial exercises (I covered this in a recent video—free and easy), gua sha, and facial vibration. Add red and near-infrared light to these if you want the next level. This improves circulation, supports your lymphatics to remove waste products, and maintains structure. For the face, a vibration plate for the body is too powerful and aggressive. Instead, use dedicated facial vibration devices like those with plasma glow or gua sha modes, which operate at frequencies around 220 to 250 Hz. Think of this as resistance training for your face.
Step Three: Rebuild Structure with Controlled Stimulation
Microneedling with a derma roller activates those fibroblasts you’ve now supercharged with red light therapy. It builds dermal density—skin thickness. We have images showing dermal density measured with boosting serums, so you can see how it works. Plasma zones also deliver pointed signals, and synthetic exosomes can direct signals to your skin.
Step Four: Strengthen the Skin
Retinol is non-negotiable here. It thickens the dermis, improves cell turnover, and supports collagen production. Without it, your skin becomes thinner, making any volume loss look twice as bad. Look for retin aldehyde—it’s a great balance between effectiveness and non-inflammation, giving visible results without killing fat cells. Strong retinoic acid can cause inflammation and fat loss. Retin aldehyde is my choice. Also, you need vitamin C to build collagen—pair them together.
Step Five: Support Volume Early Without Fillers
Address fullness early with products that restore volume. Use FILINE (a cream) that supports adipocyte activity—your fat cell activity and surface volume. It softens hollowing early. Remember: if you think you’re going to lose weight, start these things earlier, not halfway through your journey. That’s priming—you reinforce volume, you don’t wait to fix it later. In clinics, we inject biostimulators before people even lose weight.
Step Six: Tighten as You Lose Weight
As fat decreases, the skin is forced to contract. Use home radiofrequency devices like new RF. They stimulate collagen by denaturing proteins and letting them rebuild. Lose volume without tightening, and you get sag. Tightening is key. My personal favorite is new RF.
Step Seven: Prep the Skin with Exosomes
Think exosomes—particularly plant stem cell exosomes. This is huge in Korea. Before everything, your skin barrier matters. Products like Exo Bomb hydrate, support the microbiome, and prepare the skin to respond better to every step. It contains niacinamide, tranexamic acid, and peptides to brighten. These are lyophilized exosomes—you mix them at home so you know they’re active. The package comes with two parts: mix one part into your cream and store in the fridge for three months. Plant stem cell exosomes are absolutely key for priming.
Internal Support: From the Inside Out
Protein drives structure. If you undereat protein, your body pulls from muscle tissue, you lose muscle, and you lose volume. Keep your muscle—it’s your longevity target. Aim for 0.7 to 1 gram per pound of ideal body weight per day of protein. Add collagen peptides for connective tissue, and creatine for cellular energy and muscle signaling. These three factors protect your base from the inside out.
The 10-Pound Rule
This is critical, and we see it in clinic every day. The first 10 pounds you lose from your body—it starts to look good. You get nice high cheeks, a defined jawline, you lose the double chin. But the next 10 pounds changes your face negatively. So lose weight slowly, watch your face, and most importantly: prime early. Support structure early. Don’t react after you see sag or fat loss—prepare. That’s what priming is.
These weight loss drugs didn’t create the problem; they just exposed it. Luckily, we learned from it, and now you know how to stay ahead. Prime your face first. That’s the difference between looking lean and looking older.
