The Regeneration Protocol for Tightening Loose Skin
Dealing with loose, flabby skin after significant weight loss is a challenge. After personally losing over 80 pounds of fat, I struggled with it too. But the human body possesses an incredible innate intelligence: it constantly regenerates itself. Your skin cells regenerate every 30 days. This means if you follow a specific protocol, you can notice substantial changes within a month. This is the exact system I used for myself and for thousands of students worldwide, whether your loose skin is from dramatic weight loss or a general lack of firmness.
The Power of Autophagy: Eating Yourself to Tighter Skin
The first step is to achieve a process called autophagy. The Greeks called it "eat thyself," and it's a magnificent, sophisticated mechanism. Autophagy is the body's way of regenerating cells, healing them, and specifically rejuvenating your skin cells. It's the process of getting rid of old, damaged cells and replenishing them with healthy, new ones.
Think of your body like a refrigerator filled with groceries. Every item—the orange juice, the yogurt, the milk—has an expiration date. If you let them expire and just shove them to the back without throwing them out, you create a toxic environment. That's exactly what happens when you don't achieve autophagy. Your skin cells, proteins, and mitochondria all have expiration dates. Without autophagy, these dead cells linger in your body like floating zombies. Autophagy is your body's way of clearing out those "expired groceries." Your innate intelligence will try to repair a cell, and if it can't, it triggers a process called apoptosis—programmed cell death—to eliminate it entirely, then produces a healthy new cell from a stem cell. You don't need to pay thousands; you can get stem cells for free through fasting.
My favorite way to kickstart autophagy is through fasting, and there are three powerful methods.
Method 1: The Daily 18:6 Fast. This means you fast for 18 hours out of a 24-hour period. During your fasted state, you can have water, coffee, tea, and electrolytes—nothing else. No food. You then have a 6-hour eating window. During this window, focus on consuming high-quality, collagen-rich protein. Bone broth, ground beef, chicken, and organ meats are excellent choices to support that skin-repairing process.
Method 2: The Weekly 24-Hour Fast. You'll achieve even more autophagy with this method. I recommend doing this once per week. Simply go from lunch to lunch, or dinner to dinner—just one full 24-hour period without food. For example, if you finish dinner on Sunday at 2 p.m., you fast until Monday at 2 p.m.
Method 3: The Monthly 48-Hour Water Fast. This is more aggressive but yields the greatest benefits. Once per month, extend your fast to 48 hours. Using the same example, you would not eat from 2 p.m. on Sunday until 2 p.m. on Tuesday. This amplifies autophagy, accelerates fat loss, and research even shows it can reset dopamine receptors in the brain.
Building Lean Muscle: The Framework for Firm Skin
The second part of the protocol is to practice strength training to build lean muscle mass. Putting on lean muscle gives you the visual appearance of tighter skin. Muscle is an organ, often called the "longevity organ." It improves insulin sensitivity and raises your basal metabolic rate. But for our purpose, it fills out your loose skin, making it more firm and tight. If you have loose skin and didn't lose a dramatic amount of weight, it's likely because you lack muscle mass underneath.
Not all exercises are equal. You need compound movements—exercises that recruit multiple joints at the same time, rather than isolating one muscle group (like bicep curls or leg extensions). These five compound movements give you the biggest bang for your buck and also trigger further autophagy.
- Push-Ups. If these are too easy, do bench press or dumbbell bench press. If they are too difficult, do push-ups on your knees or against a wall.
- Squats. This gives you the greatest metabolic benefit and hormonal cascade. Do bodyweight squats, add weights, or simply sit and stand from a chair if needed.
- Shoulder Press. Start with just your arms, then add dumbbells or a barbell. Shoulders have receptor sites for testosterone, so this is a bonus.
- High-Intensity Burst with Recovery. This can be sprinting, cycling, or swimming. Go all-out for 20 to 30 seconds, then rest for one minute. That's one round. Do five rounds, twice a week.
- Burpees. Drop to the ground (chest and thighs hit), push yourself up, jump, and clap. Do as many as possible in 30 seconds, rest for one minute, and repeat for five rounds.
Eliminating Inflammatory Fats: The Skin's Hidden Enemy
The third step is to remove specific fats that create inflammation, age your skin, and prevent tightening. The two biggest offenders are fish oil and vegetable oils.
Fish Oil. I know this is a shock. A healthy, 6-foot-tall man's brain requires about 7.2 milligrams of DHA per day. One capsule of fish oil often contains 1,000 milligrams of DHA and EPA—a super-physiological overdose. Furthermore, 83% of fish oil on the shelf is already rancid. Even the "best" fish oil becomes rancid when it enters your warm body (98.6°F) and mixes with stomach acid. This rancid fat ends up in your epidermis. Countries that consume the most fish oil correlate with the highest rates of skin cancer—the oil gets into your skin, sunlight hits it, and it oxidizes. The solution is simple: eat the fish. Eat wild-caught fish twice per week. The oil is safe inside the fish, but dangerous once extracted.
Vegetable Oils. These are highly inflammatory and will prevent skin tightening while accelerating aging. You must avoid these nine oils: canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, rice bran oil, grape seed oil, and refined peanut oil. They are polyunsaturated fatty acids that cause rapid aging. Swap them for saturated and monounsaturated fats. For cooking, use animal fats like butter, ghee, beef tallow, lard, and duck fat. For dressings and dips, use fruit-based fats like coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil. When eating out, I tell the server I am allergic to these oils and show them a card from seedoilcard.com—it's free to download and can save your skin.
Mastering Your Metabolic Trio: Glucose, Cortisol, and Insulin
The fourth step is to master three key factors: glucose, insulin, and cortisol.
Glucose and Insulin. High blood sugar and high insulin deplete your amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein for your skin. If you strip away your amino acids for 30 days, your regenerated skin cells will be unhealthy, and you won't achieve firm skin. Elevated blood sugar creates a process called Advanced Glycation End Products (appropriately abbreviated as AGEs, because they age you faster). Think of sugar like sticky cotton candy at a fair. Sugar sticks to the protein in your skin cells, stripping away collagen and preventing tightening. It also depletes nitric oxide, causing high blood pressure.
The biggest culprit for spiking blood sugar and insulin is carbohydrates. To counteract this, adopt a low-carbohydrate diet. Drop your total carbs under 100 grams per day. Focus on high-quality, collagen-rich protein and the healthy fats I just mentioned.
Cortisol. Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, which strips amino acids, creates a "cortisol belly," and ages you faster. My favorite way to lower cortisol instantly is to take "Vitamin G." Vitamin G is the practice of gratitude. This isn't woo-woo; studies show that when you practice gratitude, your body produces oxytocin and your cortisol drops immediately. It's the quickest, easiest way to lower stress and support your skin.
Eliminating Alcohol's Damage
The fifth step is to eliminate or strictly limit alcohol. Alcohol is a poison and a neurotoxin. Even the "healthiest" alcohol forces your liver and metabolism to prioritize clearing it over other critical processes—like regenerating healthy skin cells.
The worst offenders are beer and wine. A study shared on my podcast showed that the average California wine contains 64 herbicides and pesticides, which rip open tight junctions and create cellular inflammation. Beer is highly estrogenic and lowers testosterone.
If you must drink, stick to clear alcohols like whiskey, tequila, and vodka. If you want wine, choose biodynamic wines which are healthier. To biohack the damage, take a strong binder (like the one from Systemic Formulas called "Bind") an hour before drinking. Take a high-quality glutathione supplement while drinking. And if you can, eat asparagus while you drink—asparagus has been shown to help the liver detoxify alcohol.
Harnessing Light: Photobiomodulation
The sixth step is to use something called photobiomodulation, or red light therapy. Red light stimulates fibroblasts, which are the cells responsible for producing collagen—the key protein for skin elasticity and firmness. It also penetrates the skin to promote better blood circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to your cells.
However, more red light is not always better. The protocol is simple: use a red light device about 10 minutes on each side of your body, twice per day. If you have a targeted device, hold it about 10 inches from your skin. If you have a full panel, do 10 minutes on your front and 10 minutes on your back—just 20 minutes total. You can find the studies on PubMed by searching "photobiomodulation."
This entire protocol works in harmony with your body's natural regeneration cycle. When you follow these steps—especially the fasting to achieve autophagy, the strength training to build muscle, the removal of inflammatory fats, the management of your glucose and insulin, the reduction of alcohol, and the use of red light therapy—you will see your loose, flabby skin transform. Your body has the innate intelligence to regenerate itself. You just need to give it the right instructions and the right environment to do its magnificent work.
