Imagine looking in the mirror and feeling that your lips are small, thin, or flat. They seem unnoticeable on your face, blending into the background while your eyebrows, eyes, nose, and jaw carry all the attention. Yet lips are a major part of your looks and the way you carry yourself. They hold a specific value in your overall appearance.
A lip filler is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid injected into the lips using multiple techniques. Once inside the skin, it retains fluid and swells slightly, increasing volume in the targeted area. The boundaries become prominent and well-defined. If you are interested in enhancing your natural beauty features, you can definitely go for lip fillers.
Who Truly Needs Lip Fillers?
The suitable candidates are those with specific characteristics. If you are born with very thin lips, flatter lips, or very small lips, you may be a candidate. When the face-to-lip ratio is much less, or your nose and jaw are slightly protruding and your lips appear compressed, there is a slight disproportion. In such cases, you can consider lip fillers to bring balance to your face.
As we age, we lose the definition of our lips. They become flatter, and the proper border from the vermilion border fades away. If you have dental issues, such as weakened tooth structure, fallen teeth, or bone resorption that has caused the bone to move back, a feature can appear with a round face and very tiny lips. In that case, lip fillers can restore what time has taken.
For those who smoke and have developed wrinkles over their lips, fillers can help. They slightly widen and spread out the lips, reducing the appearance of those wrinkles. And if your lips are very round compared to your face ratio, and you desire a wider, plumper, fuller lip by choice, you can have it. The lips can be customized into any shape.
The Invisible Problem: The Fear of Transformation
Here is where the story takes an interesting turn. We see two sorts of clients. The first kind carries a picture of the lips they want, but they keep insisting on not getting too much volume. They are scared. In their imagination, they like fuller lips, but practically, they are not ready to face society with those fuller lips. During the consultation, they keep saying, "We don't want much of a difference." So the doctor chooses a filler that does not plump too much and brings only moderate volumization.
But then, after the treatment, you love your new lips—and now you feel they are less in shape. This is the first reason for dissatisfaction. You have two contradictory statements in your mind: you want fuller lips, but you tell the doctor to hold back the volume. The doctor will inject just one CC of a mid-volume filler, which brings a little difference, not too much.
If you have done one filler and now want fuller lips, you can absolutely go for another session. Visit the doctor and say, "I am comfortable with this volume, and now I am ready to face society with more." It is always advisable not to go with too much filler in the first session. Start with one CC, and if you like, you can go for another.
How many CCs are generally needed? There is no hard and fast rule. For someone with already fuller lips who has lost some definition due to aging, half a CC might be enough to restore comfort. But for a client with a bigger face and very thin lips with no definition, you might need two or even two-point-five CCs. However, we never recommend two-point-five CC under one sitting. Why? Because injecting two CC immediately will create small bumps inside the lips. That is too much volume all at once. It is better to inject one CC, let the patient settle, and then inject another.
Always keep this in mind: if you continue having lip fillers when needed or when the volume goes down, it keeps giving you even better results. Many clients tell me that the second session was more beautiful, and the third was even more beautiful. Your filler never disappears just like that. The doctor may say its life is one year, but that does not mean that after exactly one year, the next morning the filler has vanished. No. After six to seven months, the filler starts going down. If you redo another CC, it adds to the previous volume. So in the second session, you have better results.
The Risks: Only in the Wrong Hands
I love to say this: the right treatment for the right patient in the right hands is always a safe treatment. Otherwise, all treatments are unsafe. You need a hygienic environment, an expert hand, good quality filler, and you must be the right candidate. When all these are in place, there are generally no side effects.
Mild bruising, bleeding, swelling, and pain after two to three days are a usual downtime of a lip filler treatment. Beyond that, there are no particular side effects if you are in expert hands, using the right choice of filler, and you are the right candidate.
If side effects do appear, they can include infections from poor hygiene or poor quality filler. Granulomas—ball-like structures—can form inside the lips and need to be dissolved or removed by operation. Your filler can diffuse to areas you did not intend. For example, filler meant for the pink lips can spread to the area between your nose and lips, creating an unpleasant look. Or you inject in the lower lip, and it diffuses to near the chin. This happens because of poor technique or poor choice of filler.
In the past, clients used to bring pictures of very big lips and wanted that exact look. But awareness has changed. Now, many fear the dreaded "sausage lips" and hesitate to go for lip fillers at all. But here is the truth: if you inject the right quantity of lip filler, you will not end up with sausage lips. If you become crazy about overfilling, then yes, it brings that feel. But if you inject a limited, required quantity, with an expert hand, the right filler, and the right candidate, it will keep you safe, keep you happy, and just keep enhancing your natural preexisting beauty features.
