The Promise Within Your Own Blood
Imagine a treatment for thinning hair that doesn't require surgery, that uses nothing but your own body's healing potential. For years, hair loss seemed like a battle you could only fight with transplants—painful, expensive, and often temporary. But there is another way, one that has emerged from the world of orthopedic medicine and wound healing, and it is now transforming how we approach hair restoration.
The procedure is called PRP—platelet-rich plasma—combined with ACell, and it is a story of turning your own blood into a regenerative force. Here is how it works: we draw your blood, just like a routine lab test. That blood is then spun in a centrifuge, a machine that separates its components. The centrifuge isolates the platelet-rich plasma, a golden liquid teeming with growth factors and cytokines. These are the signaling molecules that stimulate stem cells—the master cells that create hair—and also encourage new blood vessels to grow into areas that have lost circulation. The combination of these two factors dramatically improves the blood supply to old hair follicles, making them stronger and thicker, and even coaxing follicles that have stopped growing to start producing hair again.
From the Operating Room to the Clinic
This discovery wasn't made in a lab far away. It was stumbled upon about five to six years ago during hair transplant surgeries. Surgeons noticed that when they bathed the transplanted hair follicles in PRP and ACell, the grafts took better and healed faster. The natural question followed: if it works so well during transplants, why not try it without the surgery? And so a new, non-surgical approach was born.
Consider the experience of one patient who had already undergone three hair transplants. He explains his reasons for giving up on further surgery: "The cost was pretty big, the pain level was significant, and the length of time it took—you have to do small portions at a time. The first two transplants gave pretty good results for a while, but even over time those began to fall out." He decided to try PRP and ACell instead. The procedure gave him about a day and a half of visible swelling, but no significant discomfort unless he touched the injected areas. He expected to see improvements in three to four months, with continued improvement for about a year. After that, a reinjection is needed.
How the Procedure Unfolds
The treatment takes about an hour and a half. First, we draw your blood—about 60 cc's. This is placed into a system called the Magellan, which automatically siphons the blood into the centrifuge. Over 15 minutes, the centrifuge separates the red blood cells from the serum. The serum is then divided into platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-poor plasma (PPP). The Magellan system is unique because it is completely enclosed, and it produces a PRP concentration four to seven times higher than normal blood—a concentration that is essential for it to be effective. From 60 cc's of blood, we get about 10 cc's of PRP and 20 cc's of PPP. We usually do a second spin to get more, covering the entire treatment area.
Before the injections, we numb the entire scalp using a ring block—a circular pattern of lidocaine. This is the only part of the procedure that causes any discomfort. Once numb, the first injection is ACell combined with vitamin D. ACell is a product that stimulates stem cells and wound repair, originally used for non-healing wounds. It enhances stem cell migration into the treated areas, improving the overall result. Vitamin D is added because it seems to boost the effect.
Next, we inject the activated PRP. Activation is crucial: we mix the PRP with calcium chloride, which releases all the growth factors from the platelets. Once activated, we have only about seven minutes to inject it. We inject it throughout the scalp, and it gradually spreads and equalizes. The patient typically feels nothing during this part.
The Final Boost: Microneedling and Platelet-Poor Plasma
After the injections, we perform a final step called dermapen microneedling. A device with 1,300 tiny needles per second creates micro-channels across the entire scalp. While this is happening, we drip the platelet-poor plasma (PPP) onto the scalp. Even though PPP has fewer platelets than PRP, it still contains platelets and acts like a fertilizer, soaking into the micro-channels. We leave the PPP on the scalp overnight, and the patient washes it off the next morning.
What to Expect
The results are not immediate. Improvement begins around three to four months, and continues for about eleven months, after which it may slowly decrease. Studies have shown an improvement in hair density ranging from 13% to 62% in all patients. This is not a permanent fix—booster injections are needed about once a year. Men typically require two initial injections, while women respond so well that only one is often needed.
After the procedure, there are no real restrictions. You can wear a cap and go out to dinner that same night. Some swelling may appear by the next day, but it is mild. The treatment is completely natural, using your own immune system, stem cells, growth factors, and cytokines to restore hair.
