The Art of the Invisible Lift: Understanding PDO Threads
Imagine a tool that has been quietly perfecting itself for decades inside operating rooms, used in the most delicate of surgeries on the heart and bones. That tool is the PDO thread, an absorbable suture that has found a new purpose in the gentle art of facial rejuvenation. It is not a new invention, but rather a clever adaptation of something we already know works well. The threads are made from a material that your body will eventually absorb, and they are designed specifically to coax your skin into acting younger. The key is in the quality of the product. Some threads are paired with a cannula—the tiny tube used to place them—that is also approved by the FDA. This is a mark of a product that has gone through rigorous testing, ensuring that the device placed into your face is as safe and effective as the thread itself.
The Collagen Conversation
After we turn thirty, our bodies begin a slow, steady destruction of collagen, about one percent of it every year. This is a natural process, but it is not one we have to accept without a fight. We must be methodical in our plan to tell our bodies to make better collagen and to slow down this destruction. PDO threads are a direct conversation with your skin. They stimulate your body to produce fresh collagen, the scaffolding that gives skin its firmness and bounce. But they do more than just that. They are also designed to lift and reposition tissue. As gravity pulls on our midface, jawline, and neck, these threads can gently coax everything back into place. They are not, however, a substitute for a surgical facelift. If you have a great deal of loose, sagging skin or very dense tissue, threads may not be the right answer. But for those with mild to moderate laxity, they can be a wonderful option.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Procedure
You will come in with a freshly washed face, though we will wash it again here to ensure it is completely free of bacteria and pollution. We will pull your hair back with a band, which will likely leave your hair a little messy, so plan accordingly. You will be numbed thoroughly. In fact, you will be so numb that you might feel as though you cannot feel your face at all. For those who are nervous about needles or the numbing process itself, we offer a gentle form of nitrous oxide, similar to the laughing gas used in dentistry, but milder. The best part is that you do not need a driver. Within fifteen minutes of stopping the gas, it is out of your system, and by the time you have used the restroom and had your post-procedure photos taken, you will be safe to drive yourself home.
The Recovery Journey
This is not a procedure you want to have two weeks before a major event. The swelling and tenderness can last a good seven to ten days, and the real collagen stimulation takes four to six to eight weeks to become visible. The tenderness is a sign that your body is working, so consider it a gentle reminder of the changes happening beneath the surface. You will be sore, so eating a giant sandwich or a juicy hamburger might be difficult for the first few days. A soft diet is a good idea. You can wear makeup immediately afterward, but you probably will not want to because your face will be swollen. The real investment is in protecting those threads. They are like tiny pieces of Velcro. Your body needs time to wrap collagen fibers around them to secure the lift. If you do strenuous exercise, such as burpees, Pilates, or yoga, you risk putting tension on the threads and losing some of the lift. So please avoid workouts for at least seven to ten days. If you sleep on your side or stomach, use an airline pillow to keep pressure off your face. Sleeping propped up in a recliner works too. These small steps protect your investment.
The Little Quirks of the Process
You will be aware of the threads inside your face. You might hear a clicking or popping sound. This is completely normal. Your body is breaking down the threads, and that process takes about four to six to eight weeks, depending on your metabolism. The threads are not permanent. There was a time, about twenty years ago, when permanent threads were used, and they were a disaster. They were pulled from the market. The dissolvable threads we use today are far superior, giving decent results without the complications of those old, permanent ones. You will have a few small poke holes where the threads were inserted. They are not incisions and do not require stitches. We place a clear, small bandage over each one to keep them clean. Leave those on for twenty-four to forty-eight hours. You can wash your face, apply makeup, and use your skincare products with them on. They are almost invisible, so you might need a little help from a loved one to remove them.
The Investment and the Timeline
The cost of threads is not a one-size-fits-all number. It depends on the dose, the number of threads, and the type of threads used. A general range for the larger lifting threads is between $1,200 and $3,000. For the smaller threads used under the eyes, which are about the size of an eyelash, the cost is lower, typically between $400 and $500 per session. These smaller threads are a favorite for treating the delicate skin under the eyes, which begins to thin in our thirties, making blood vessels more visible and the skin appear crepey. They do not lift the tissue; they simply thicken it. You will need to repeat these smaller thread sessions every three to four months for a series of about three treatments. The larger threads last longer, about six to twelve months, depending on your age and genetics. The more lift you need, the more threads we put in, and sometimes they last longer because of the higher dose. The best way to get an accurate estimate is to come in for a consultation so we can assess your individual needs and goals.
Where the Magic Happens
Threads are most commonly used on the midface and the jawline. They can help lift the smile lines and reduce the appearance of jowls. They can also be used on the neck to lift the skin there. Some places use them on the brows, but I have elected not to do that because I do not feel the results last long enough to be worth it. I would rather give you a better result with a different approach. The smaller threads are wonderful for the eye area, and they can also be used on the body, such as on crepey skin on the belly or above the knees, to stimulate collagen in those areas. Whatever your goals, the most important step is to come in for a consultation. We want to be respectful of your time and not disappoint you on the day of your procedure if threads are not the best option for you. Sometimes the best plan involves a different treatment, and we want to lay out the most effective path to meet your goals.
Patience as a Virtue
You did not arrive at this point overnight, and we are not going to fix it overnight. The threads give you an instant result, but the real beauty comes with time. Your body will do the work of lifting and tightening, and you will see the full effect after a few months. During that time, be patient. Embrace the weirdness. Protect your investment. And remember, this is a journey, not a race. Your future self will thank you for the methodical care you take today.
